Same Sex Marriage Should Be Respected - 1123 Words

Imagine a homosexual man or woman soldier in our military being gun downed in combat. Now imagine having a traditional funeral procession with his husband or her wife front-and-center waiting to get the folded flag from their coffin. How would the image of the man in uniform with respected power turning his nose up to the spouse and ignoring their very existence look? How would this symbolize our â€Å"free† country? Do we as a nation not comfort or encourage the spouse to continue living through the transition because of the tolerated support of homosexuals (â€Å"Lawrence v Texas 3)? Despite the controversial issue within the American society, same-sex marriage should be respected at the same level as traditional opposite-sex marriage. â€Å"Marriage is the ultimate affirmation of a sexual relationship. Marriage is the institution in which we not only tolerate people having sex and housing children, but we encourage it and celebrate it as a society† (Foust 3). Most states attempted to avoid the same-sex marriage issue by defining marriage between man and woman, but that soon became an unexpected controversial issue (â€Å"Same-Sex Marriage Laws† 3). The problem with defining marriage between man and woman was the limits of power and rights of homosexuals (â€Å"Same-Sex Marriage Laws† 4). The English language is just like a living document; the meanings of words change everyday if not by the second (Liptak 2).
